2 Minute Read:
Over the past several years, there has been an increasing amount of excitement about platelet-rich plasma injections, commonly known as PRP. While PRP has been used in sports medicine for decades, it is more recently being focused on cosmetic improvements. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes, “Dermatologists and plastic surgeons are using the natural healing properties of platelets to improve the appearance and overall health of the skin.”
How Can I Benefit From PRP Injections?
- PRP for facial rejuvenation
- PRP for hair loss
- PRP for vaginal rejuvenation (O-Shot®)
- PRP for male sexual enhancement (P-Shot®)
What Is PRP Exactly?
PRP has long been used to help heal joint and muscle injuries. Cosmetic applications are relatively new, with limited research available, but patients report good results for many conditions ranging from wrinkles to thinning hair to sexual dysfunction and urinary incontinence.
PRP treatments harvest a patient’s plasma from their blood samples to inject back into the body. The plasma component of blood contains stem cells and growth-rich platelets that can accelerate their body’s natural collagen and elastin production—the building blocks of firm, youthful-looking skin.
When injected into the face, PRP helps to smooth wrinkles and improve skin tone and texture. These injections can be performed alone or in combination with dermal fillers or facial fat grafting.
PRP treatments for hair loss involve injections into the vascular layer around hair follicles. It doesn’t reverse the process of hair loss, but it does stimulate new growth of hair so that loss is much less noticeable.
For vaginal rejuvenation, PRP treatments include the O-Shot®, which helps stimulate tissue and nerve growth in the area of the vagina and clitoris.
For male sexual enhancement, the P-Shot® can help with firmer and larger erections, enhanced sexual satisfaction, improved libido, and increased penile sensitivity.
How Is PRP Administered?
A clinician will draw a small sample of blood of the patient’s blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the other blood components. It is then injected subcutaneously into the area being treated.
A topical painkiller is usually applied just prior to treatment.
Is There a Recovery Period for PRP Treatments?
Because the treatment involves your body’s own materials, recovery should take a couple of days, maximum. No chemicals are involved, hence no side effects.
How Long Do PRP Results Last?
You will notice the maturation of your results a few weeks following your PRP treatment. Although it can improve skin quality, hair growth, and increase vaginal sensitivity, PRP does not stop time or reverse the natural aging processes.
Therefore, you may find that another procedure may be necessary at some point.
