Hair loss can be psychologically and emotionally devastating for affected females. A significant 30 percent of all women and 50 percent of women over age 40 have some degree of hair loss. There are many causes of hair loss in women, but the condition can be diagnosed, managed, and treated by Dr. Frank Agullo here at Southwest Plastic Surgery.
Common Causes of Hair Loss in Women
Hair loss in women occurs not as a receding hairline but as a diffused thinning across the top of the scalp. This makes female hair loss more difficult to recognize. Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is one of the most common causes of hair loss and can occur even in adolescence. AGA in women is typically genetic. Other causes of hair loss may include autoimmune disorders like alopecia areata, scarring as a result of injury, scalp infections, trichotillomania (compulsive hair plucking), and loose-anagen syndrome, where loose hair comes off while combing. In addition to these conditions, many other things may cause temporary hair loss in women. Female temporary hair loss can occur due to hormonal changes, hypothyroidism, ovarian tumors, anemia, nutritional causes, crash dieting, emotional stress, hair abuse, and lupus or other connective tissue diseases. Certain medications may also cause temporary hair loss, including blood thinners, anti-inflammatory drugs, blood pressure medication, cholesterol medication, seizure medication, oral contraceptives, and more.
