If you are considering a gender-affirming surgery, it is crucial that you take your time to prepare for the operation and the recovery process.

What Do Surgery Preparations Entail?

Besides being physically and mentally fit for the surgery, the following preparations will guarantee you a successful and smooth procedure:

  • Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol two weeks before and after the surgery.
  • Discontinue the use of any hormones you may be on before surgery to avoid blood clotting.
  • Avoid eating or drinking anything on the day of the procedure.
  • Have a loved one drive you to the appointment. It is an important day for you, and you may be overwhelmed with emotions. Additionally, since surgical procedures are performed under general anesthesia, which will prevent you from driving yourself home.
  • Have all the required documentation ready before the scheduled appointment.

How Do I Get Comfortable After Surgery?

Your body will heal better and faster if you are comfortable and at ease. After the surgery, you should:

Invest in a Good Quality Neck Pillow

Patients are discouraged from driving during any part of their recovery. (You must not drive until you are off all medications that can impair your judgment).

Nonetheless, if you have to, ensure you have a quality rest pillow. It also comes in handy when driving or taking a flight out of town for the operation. A reading pillow is also overly essential for back cushioning while reading a book or watching television.

A Pill Separator

After the surgery, you will be prescribed several pills and other medications for your comfort. A pill separator helps you organize your medicines for easy access.

Compression Socks

You should try as much as possible to wear compression socks at all times after your surgery. They help you move around quickly and freely and facilitate the free flow of blood, thus alleviating the formation of blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Button-Up Shirts

Ensure that you wear loose and comfy clothes such as button-up shirts after the procedure. They are easy to wear and convenient for bandages, gauze, and drains.
